Why do we learn English?

Is it because it´s important to speak English to live in a world where globalization is expanding to all countries very fast?

Many people say we learn English for the future. However, I don´t think learning English is only for the future. I believe learning English helps us to see things from a different point of view.

I started to like studying English in junior high school. I was not very good at English in elementary school. Now, I want to study English harder and I want to be able to speak more English.

I started to like English once I understood and remembered the meaning of new words. It was challenging but also fun.

My mother lived in the United States for two years and she told me interesting stories about cultural differences between Japan and the US. She told me an interesting story about how we use the eraser. My mother was taking English lessons from an American teacher before living in the US. One day, when my mother was using an eraser, the teacher asked her “How come you don´t use the eraser on the pencil? Why do you use another eraser when you have one on the pencil?”. At least for me, the eraser on the pencil is very small so using another eraser, a bigger eraser, is more convenient. But I guess American people think using the eraser on the pencil is more practical. I was surprised to find out how American people see some things in a different way.

I was also very surprised to know how widely drive-through services are used in the US. When I think about drive-through services, I can only think of restaurants. However, in the US, there are drive-through services at drug stores and even at banks. By having these services you can avoid dangerous situations such as leaving your child in a car alone. Also, these services are useful for people with disabilities and elderly people.

I believe understanding cultural differences will expand our minds. In the future, I want to live in another country and use English in my daily life. That will help me to grow as a person.

Now, I have a dream. I want to work as a ground staff at the airport. For the moment it´s not easy to get in touch with people from other countries in the situation with COVID-19. However, even under this situation, I would like to help people from all over the world by using English.

I would like to make people in troubles feel safe and relieved. I want to help people who are travelling abroad. Communicating with people from other countries will add a great value to my life.

These are the motivations to study English for me. I would like to study English harder to become a better person.
